Dispatch is live at any hour. You will be asked four questions, told honestly whether this needs a technician tonight or a cheaper daytime visit, and given the applicable rate before anybody gets in a vehicle.

  • Live triage overnight, at weekends and on public holidays
  • After hours rate quoted on the phone, never discovered on the invoice
  • Vulnerable occupants and heat advisory conditions escalate the call
  • Flat rate repair pricing approved before work begins, at any hour

How a night call is handled

Triage first, because not every failure is worth an overnight rate

An air conditioning system that has stopped producing cold air is not automatically an emergency, and treating every call as one would be an expensive habit to inflict on customers. What determines urgency is the indoor temperature trend, who is in the building, and whether anything is being damaged while you wait. A well insulated house on a mild night will drift slowly and can comfortably wait for a morning visit at the standard rate. The same building during a heat advisory, with an infant, an elderly resident or somebody whose medication or condition makes heat genuinely dangerous, is a different situation entirely and gets moved up the queue.

So the phone call comes first. You will be asked what the thermostat display is showing, whether the outdoor unit is running, humming or silent, whether the indoor blower is moving air at all, and whether there is ice visible on the refrigerant lines or water pooling near the indoor equipment. Those four answers separate most no cool calls into one of five families before anybody leaves the depot, which means the technician arrives with the right parts on board rather than promising to come back tomorrow with them.

If the blower is running but the outdoor unit is silent, attention goes to the contactor, the run capacitor, the low voltage circuit and the disconnect. If the outdoor unit hums but will not turn, that pattern points hard at a failed start component or a seized bearing, and it is the one situation where leaving the system switched on can cause further damage. If both units run but the air is not cold, the question becomes charge, airflow or a coil that has already frozen. If nothing runs at all, the sequence starts at power and controls rather than at the equipment. And if water is pooling indoors, a condensate safety switch has almost certainly done its job correctly by shutting the system down before the ceiling was damaged.

That last case is worth dwelling on because it is the most common unnecessary overnight call. A float switch tripping on a humid evening is the system protecting your property. Shutting the unit off and clearing the drain in daylight is both safer and cheaper, and we will say so rather than dispatching a van at a premium rate for work that will keep.

When a visit is warranted, the technician makes the situation safe before diagnosing: confirming there is no burning smell or visible scorching at the contactor, no live conductor exposed, and no water actively reaching anything electrical. Only then do the instruments come out. Electrical readings first because they are fastest, then airflow, then refrigerant pressures interpreted against the manufacturer chart for that model. The fault is named, the flat rate quoted, and your approval taken before a single part is fitted. The hour on the clock changes the call out rate and nothing else about how the job is priced.

What you can observeMost likely familyCan it wait for morning?
Indoor fan runs, outdoor unit silentContactor, run capacitor or low voltage circuitUsually yes unless the building is already hot
Outdoor unit hums but does not spinFailed start component or a seized motorSwitch it off now, then yes, but do not keep trying it
Both run, air is not coldCharge, airflow restriction or a frozen coilOften yes, with the system off so the coil can thaw
Ice on the refrigerant lineAirflow collapse or a refrigerant shortageYes, but run the fan only so the ice clears
Nothing runs at allPower, breaker, disconnect, control transformer or thermostatCheck the breaker first, then usually yes
Water pooling near indoor unitBlocked condensate drain, float switch has trippedShut the system off to stop the damage, then yes
Burning smell or scorch marksElectrical fault at the contactor or motorNo. Shut off at the breaker and call immediately

Before the technician leaves, the system runs through a full cycle with the readings retaken, so you have proof it is operating inside specification rather than merely making noise again. Anything found that is trending toward a future failure is written down so you can schedule it at a time of your choosing.

The overnight sequence

Six stages from the phone ringing to the readings being retaken

Nothing about an emergency call is improvised. This is the order it runs in.

Four questions

Thermostat display, outdoor unit behaviour, indoor airflow, and any ice or water. Those answers narrow the fault family before dispatch.

Risk assessment

Occupancy, indoor temperature trend and any active property damage decide where the call sits in the queue.

Rate and window

The after hours figure is quoted and a realistic arrival window given, with a call back if demand shifts it.

Make safe

No burning smell, no exposed conductor, no water reaching electrics. Confirmed before any panel comes off.

Instrumented diagnosis

Electrical readings first, then airflow, then refrigerant pressures read against the chart for that exact model.

Verify and record

A full cycle run after the repair with readings retaken, and anything trending toward failure written down.

What the visit covers

Included on every emergency cooling call

These are performed regardless of what the fault turns out to be, because several of them routinely change the diagnosis.

Honest urgency verdictIncluding the verdict that costs us the call, when morning is genuinely the better option.
Electrical component testingCapacitor microfarads against nameplate, contactor condition, amp draw under load.
Airflow and coil checkFilter condition, blower operation and any ice formation, which is often the real cause.
Condensate path inspectionPan, drain and safety switch, because a tripped float looks exactly like a dead system.
Safety confirmationNo scorching, no exposed conductor, no water near anything energised, before diagnosis begins.
Written findingsWhat failed, why, the readings that prove it, and anything drifting toward a future call.

Customer testimonies

What people say about the overnight call

Called at midnight expecting to be told a van was on the way at a premium. Instead they walked me through checking the float switch and booked me for nine the next morning.

R. OsundareHomeowner, attic air handler

The four questions on the phone meant the technician turned up with the part already on the van. Fixed in under an hour.

M. LindgrenHomeowner, single story

They asked who was in the house before anything else. With my mother staying with us that mattered, and they moved us up.

Emergency cooling questions

Timing, rates and what to do while you wait

Should I keep the system switched on until you arrive?

In most cases no. If there is ice on the refrigerant lines, switch the thermostat to fan only, which keeps air moving over the coil and thaws it without running the compressor. Trying to cool through a frozen coil achieves nothing and risks liquid refrigerant reaching the compressor.

If the outdoor unit is humming without turning, switch the system off entirely. That sound usually means the motor is drawing locked rotor current, which generates heat quickly and can turn a capacitor replacement into a motor replacement. If water is pooling indoors, switch off to stop the damage.

Is it cheaper to wait until morning?

Almost always, and we will tell you when that applies. The after hours rate exists because a technician is being woken up, not because the work is different, so where the building is tolerable and nothing is being damaged, morning is the sensible choice.

The exceptions are heat advisory conditions, households with occupants who are genuinely vulnerable to heat, and anything with an electrical burning smell. Those three we would rather attend overnight even when the customer is inclined to wait.

Why did the technician check the drain before the refrigerant?

Because a condensate safety switch that has tripped presents identically to a dead system. The thermostat calls, nothing happens, and the homeowner reasonably assumes the air conditioner has failed. In reality a float in the drain pan has opened the control circuit deliberately to prevent an overflow.

It takes about ninety seconds to check and it is one of the most common causes of a summer no cool call. Reaching for gauges before ruling it out is how people end up paying for refrigerant work on a system that simply needed its drain cleared.

Can you get refrigerant into the system tonight if it is low?

We can, but a low charge means a leak, because a sealed system does not consume refrigerant. Adding gas without locating the leak puts you back in the same position within weeks or months and releases the charge a second time.

On an overnight call the honest approach is to confirm the shortage with pressure and temperature readings, explain what a leak search involves, and where the building genuinely needs cooling tonight, discuss a temporary measure with the leak repair scheduled properly in daylight. What we will not do is present a top up as a repair.

What if the fault turns out to need a part you do not carry?

Common failure items travel on the van: capacitors across the usual ratings, contactors, fan motors in the frequent sizes, float switches, transformers and thermostats. That covers the large majority of overnight no cool faults.

Where a control board, a compressor or a coil is involved, the part is ordered and we will tell you honestly what the lead time looks like rather than guessing. Where the building needs to stay habitable in the meantime, we will say plainly what can and cannot be done as an interim measure.

Where a no cool call usually leads

An overnight cooling call frequently ends in one of these, and the cause is often on the airflow side rather than in the equipment itself.
